the rollers are some magnet i got with holes in the middle, they are a little over 6mm , hence a 6mm drill bit acts as shaft.

i got 300 of those bolt and wing nut sitting around for moments like this.

the length of the protrusion of the plane iron/chisel is calculated using an application i have in my itouch, all i have to do is plug in the variables and it gives me the absolute distance between the tip of the iron and the roller.

I will be revising this and spacing the three magent/rollers further apart, it racks abit. or if i can find more magnets (or bearings)

Ill use teak next time. Saves me the trouble of warping..... or then again i can use ,marine ply.

Re: shop made honing jig

i just realized, i can salvage bearings from old roller blade, the inside of each wheel of a roller blade has "abec" bearings hmmmmmmm

the other option was to frankenstein some bearing router bits... but that is expensive 🙁

Re: shop made honing jig

@bee,

gawa ka pa ng isa para sa second bevel.
we can buy small bearings naman like NSK.

also, but id like to know the software in your itouch.

although i am not an itouch user.

Re: shop made honing jig

The software in my itouch is "Scary Sharp"

the title is abit misleading since it does not explain the scray sharp method, rather, its actualy a simple (or complicated) trigonometry software. A vernier caliper (or better yet a digital or a dial caliper) is really needed. i got my vernier caliper at mytools showa brand.. i think 600? bloody accurate.

For a second bevel i just need to change the desired angle bevel on the software , it then recalculates the length of protrusion from the honing guide.

It works really well with the chisels. As with the plane irons... huwag muna, superior parin yung pag hone ni Timber eh 🙂

hehehe kinopya ko lang yan sa mga commercially available ones.

after increasing the area of contact of the rollers i would like to incorporate a self squaring thingy in it. I have an idea that i cant describe, but it might work

Re: shop made honing jig

Nice one Bee! If you need a 2nd bevel you just need to raise the jig with a spacer. This is just a thin piece of wood you put in between the roller and the stone. You need to compute though the height of the spacer to get the 2nd angle.

Re: shop made honing jig

WOW~!~!!!!

something i thought is hard to get is ALL OVER THE PLACE....

got NSK 680Z bearings. The hole diameter is just snug for an 8mm drill bit . But i found out that a bosch 8mm drill bit is a tad larger than the rest of 8mm drill bits available from the stores...hmmm di kasya sa bosh drill bit.

if i had known earlier that bearings were so easy to come by, i wouldve used it in three of my jigs.

got them for 100 pesos each. So i bought a few extras

now.... baka may miter slot yung nang babakal sa amin......

Re: shop made honing jig

before i start posting my new honing guide

ill post this, this was sent to me by Armand.

http://www3.telus.net/BrentBeach/Sharpen/sharpen.html

its much more simple than MINE!!!! oh well.. mine is made

bolts acts as spacers. The wood part where the shaft is attached is dowel pinned to the main body

this is how i square it. I oversized the honing guide for this purpose. Now this method will only work if the 4 dimensions of the honing guide are all perfectly squared with each other. When i finished assembling the honing guide and before i attached the shaft, I ran it though the miter saw and table saw so that all four sides are perfectly square with one another. If it isnt, this method of squaring the iron will be useless

Re: shop made honing jig

standing tall and proud

i re-honed the plane iron that Timber honed last EB, coz it still had teeth. I used the scary sharp method with sandpapers and guess what..... the teeth are now gone!. But i only had uptil grit 400.... oh well... so there is my test piece

That is White Oak.... NOT BAD!!!!! for going only till grit 400!!

I planed a tanguile board, glides like butter... the white oak took alot more "coercion" (tama ba spelling?)

Re: shop made honing jig

Once the shaft was in place, i used epoxy to seal the entry and exit hole of the shaft, this is also to make the shaft rigid.

I am very darn happy with the result.. and this is without a second bevel and no back bevel. And with a bloody smoothing plane !!! WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWEEEE

I got this off wiki

" In thicknessing or preparing rough stock, the scrub plane is usually followed by the jack plane, jointer plane, then smoothing plane."

so pang huli pala tong hand plane ko na ginawa kong scrub plane....

going back to the wood, you guys should visit formaply. They have "scrap" imported hardwoods at 180 pesos per board foot. I know that sound like expensive. But for things like tooling woods, its great bang for buck

Oh my honing guide is made out of teak. And upon comparison with Timber's "redding wood" munsalangan ba tawag dun? its pretty much the same hardness. The advantage of teak for me is that it is less prone to warping due to its high oil content. And it smells like "haw flakes"

happy camper here 🙂

Re: shop made honing jig

Looks very stable unlike the cheaper commercial honing guides.. The stability will make it easier to hone since you don't have to worry about the side to side angling of the jig.

I wonder how much better the new bearings made the jig smoother to move back and forth as compared to commercially available honing guides.
