Re: shop made honing jig

Since you can hone your blades properly now does that mean you will get more planes? :p

This geeky website made my rainy Friday worse, it made me sleepy and my head aches 😡

Too vain for my taste.

Re: shop made honing jig

The software in my itouch is "Scary Sharp"

the title is abit misleading since it does not explain the scray sharp method, rather, its actualy a simple (or complicated) trigonometry software. A vernier caliper (or better yet a digital or a dial caliper) is really needed. i got my vernier caliper at mytools showa brand.. i think 600? bloody accurate.

For a second bevel i just need to change the desired angle bevel on the software , it then recalculates the length of protrusion from the honing guide.

It works really well with the chisels. As with the plane irons... huwag muna, superior parin yung pag hone ni Timber eh 🙂

May bayad pala yung app, kala ko libre lang. 😀

So para sa mga walang iPhone/iTouch/iPad, or sa mga ayaw magbayad ng $0.99:

D = (T+H)/sine(A)

Assuming I remember my trigo correctly. And you don't need a scientific calculator to compute the sine, Google can do it for you. Try googling for "sine 25 degrees"

Kung wala kayong access sa Google, malaking problema na 'yan. :p

Re: shop made honing jig

after using the honing guide for a week or so these are my obervations:

1.) YES! worth it ang veritas MK2 especially of you have several sized planed irons!
2.) can the honed iron shave my arm hair ? YES
3.) can it make a second bevel 30 degrees Yes
4.) can i take a setup iron from a plane then plug it in the guide and just hone it lightly and slap it back in the plane just as quickly? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
4.a) Why? because measuring the distance from the midpoint of the bearing to the drop of the blade is very very UN-repeatable. it all depends on how steady your hands are and how good you are with a caliper. So if i were to hone a blade that is already sharp.. i will really start from the lowest grit and up. It doesnt take long... around 5 minutes. (scary sharp method)

5.) however to find a solution for quick slap on honings one can make a "jig" that slots into guide that has a length stop and has a self squaring base referenced to the guide. The only draw back here is you have to make one for every different thickness plane iron you have.

Luckily my two plane irons are the same thickness but different widths. So i can just make one jig for that.

Re: shop made honing jig

Here's a link to a sample angle setting jig for the honing guide. Seems to work effectively. http://blog.woodworking-magazine.com/blog/My+Embarrassing+Toolsetting+Jig.aspx

Re: shop made honing jig

we hear stories of japanese craftsmen entering into a competition of who can make the longest and thinnest ribbon planing some good pine wood.

these are the men who are obsessed with sharpness!

lets find out how they hone their plane blades!

perhaps, in Bushido time, there arent any honing jig that they can purchase online!

Re: shop made honing jig

found myself joining several boards to make them wider, here after glue-up.

then using the no.7 here is one of its shavings...

practice bee, to have those full width shavings, it is indicative of a well tune handplane and something to look forward to... 😀
