Re: shop made scrib plane maybe?

i have a 2 inch blade iron lying around

I have a teak that i dimensioned to s4s 1.75 by 2.4 inch.

I milled that teak 4 months ago... and now its still in perfect shape and form. No wood movement whatsoever.... I love teaks...

I will be using that to make a scrub plane that is slightly longer than my no4 smoothing plane using the plans above.

If i can make a scrub plane, i may eventually make a jointer plane!

Re: shop made scrib plane maybe?

Ok

I cant contain my excitement so ill post while my pics are uploading sa imageshack.... IT WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRKKKKKKKKKKSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why do it?

1.) i mean spending 2.5k to 3K for a decent scrub/jack plane is actually very reasonable but!!!

This costs close to nothing 🙂 well 250 bucks for the blade... and maybe 300 for the wood??

2.) it weighs LESS than my smoothing plane , stanley no 4!!!! ALOT LESS.

3.).... i gave it handles.. so when i get tired of pushing?... i PULL!!

4.) Its just awesome to make your own tools... the experience is thrilling 🙂

ok ok ok PROPER pics will be posted in ummm ten minutes i think

Re: shop made scrib plane maybe?

i got that nasty blister last night , while using the smoothing plane. Wala pa kasing kalyo:(

These gloves are often used, but i forgot to wear them during planing. These keep my hand from getting splinters and blisters. But maintain open tipped for me to still be able to feel textures

Re: shop made scrib plane maybe?

at this point the wedge needed working. based on the plan the curvature of the wedge has to be parabolic and not linear

So i had to hand rasp this for quite a long time

The handles were there to "disguise" the steel dowel (na nanggaling sa screw driver)

Re: shop made scrib plane maybe?

This is a newly dimensioned white oak..... i dimensioned another white oak prior to this using the same scrub plane (dog holes are AMAZING)

Now, Teak is a good wood in the sense that it doesnt move much and it is self lubricating (as long as you dont seal it) due to its natural oils.

Now when the wedge was adjusted, cut too thin, then padded with a narra laminate then everything fit, The blade still dislodges

I finally concurred that the blade side where it sits on the 45 degree slope of the teak is not getting ENOUGH FRICTION.. kasi oily yung teak

So i added of all things... masking tape to the 45degree slope.... everything worked from there on 🙂

Another thing, The pull motion only worked because i had a long front end of the plane. This is a good "mistake" on my part, since the dowel handles were to just disguise the protruding steel and the long front end of the plane was a mistake in my measuring hehehe

Re: shop made scrib plane maybe?

Great Bee! Most Japanese planes are made from White Oak, not sure if the ones you have is similar to what the Japanese use.

Nevertheless, at par with the other branded plane or not, what you have made is truly self gratifying. Another laurel leaf to your crown 😉

Galing ng plane ah! good job!

My only comment on the plane is that if you really want the plane to function as a scrub plane you should heavily camber the blade.

Re: shop made scrub plane maybe?

camber... hmmm i will have to make another honing guide with larger fixed bearings in the middle.

I can also smooth on this as well and i still find it more fun to use than the no.4 or siguro nag fafavoritism lang ako 🙂

Re: shop made scrub plane maybe?

Here is a shot of how much camber is in the blade of a scrub plane. You may need to grind out your blade first, it might take forever to get a camber like this using a honing guide.

Scrubs are meant to be used perpendicular to the grain and can take really heavy shavings like these

Re: shop made scrub plane maybe?

i just browsed the blade irons and chipbrakers of Hock Tools... they are EXPENSIVE!!

I padded the sole with another layer of teak (1/4 thick) coz the mouth was too wide. Ran it to the planer to give me a flat sole (the madaya method hehehe). I will do some free hand pattern engraving on the plane with a router.

Moji, where did you get your blades? and your muji fang wooden planes?

And where else can i get plane irons besides stanley?
