Never used a Slide Compound Miter Saw before . What is it for? I have a table saw, circular saw, and a jigsaw. Would a SCMS add any value to my workshop? (aside from it being the sexiest-looking tool on my bench). 😉

Re: Slide Compound Miter Saw

ok here it goes.

If i were to have only two powertools in the work shop? Its going to be a circular saw (ripping) and a compound miter saw! and lets say i had an extra cash, i would forego the miter saw in favor of the sliding compund miters saw.

If you set it up right, you can crosscut stocks to EXACT lenth everytime! and it takes what.. ummmm 3 seconds to cut!.

Lest say i want to make 10 legs of this size and another 5 of another and 20 of this other.
What i would do is place a stock, mark it, align it with the blade then butt a wood at its end and clamp that butted wood, this will act as a length stop. Then you just keep putting stock in, butt it against the clamped wood and CHOP! EXACT LENGTH reproduction

Now a CMS can only cross cut to 6 inches a SCMS can crosscut upto 12 inches!!!!!! and yes having the capacity to cut a 12 inch stock is indeed a sweet feeling.

That is why when this comes out in July i might get one 🙂 or maybe get Chisel's Jet 🙂

ay kulang pa, .... if you tune it up right you can make EXACT 45 degree cuts and other angle cuts!, easy kanto-mesa

Re: Slide Compound Miter Saw

Thanks, Ben. Pardon me for ignorance on the scms. Could I not do the same things you mentioned as easily on a table saw with miter, fences, and clamping of some wood?

Re: Slide Compound Miter Saw

yes you could but not as easilly, Especially when crosscutting at an angle,

There are several positive stops in a SCMS these are usually 25 45 50 etc. degrees so when setting an angle , its dead quick

For setting an angle in the miter gauge its not so bad, but for me i prefer the scms for crosscutting upto 12"

this is one of those tools where once you get it, you'd think, "now why didnt i get it alot earlier"

Re: Slide Compound Miter Saw

@Armand: The trestle......is alive!!! Bwahahaha!!!

@balarila: Just think of the S/CMS as a great cross and miter cut tool. Sure the table saw can do that as the table saw is somewhat a Swiss knife of cutters, it can do it but with extra setups. The thing is, since the S/CMS is a dedicated tool it is easier to setup.

The main question is: How much cutting requirement could an S/CMS can do before you need a table saw?
The main question is: How much cutting requirement could an S/CMS can do before you need a table saw?
the slide cms can do only about 12 inches cut...the new festool i think is 13" wide as well as the new bosch scms.

beyond the regular 12 inches, you're going to need the TS...

but whenever i am lazy using the TS, i just flip a 24" wide board and be able to crosscut/ripcut it using the scms.

only thing i hate about my makita LS1013 scms is...its a dust monster and its wailing beyond the 100dB mark...but other than that, its simply a pleasure to use.

Darn...was hoping you guys would discourage me against it.

But what am I thinking? This is a tool-addiction site! 😉

Making a bid for chisel's SCMS.
