Are spiral upcut or downcut or combination upcut/downcut router bits available locally? Or yet another item for online purchase? Ezcut doesn't seem to make them, for some reason.
Re: Spiral upcut/downcut router bits
I have not seen any dedicated for the routers, but I am using mill ends and they seem to look the same and they perform well. Until I get a real spiral bit I cannot really tell if its the same... of course make sure the shank size is correct to begin with... 😀

Re: Spiral upcut/downcut router bits
This is one of the best router bit I own. I love the way it cuts, very clean and the bit itself is real sharp. The weight and appearance of the tool says something that it's top notch quality. Solid Carbide.

@jay,
ala pa ako downcut or upcut spiral bit and relies mostly on endmills for routing grooves etc..end mills have this habit of being choked especially so on mdf and it is advisable to make several light passes.
but those downcut/upcut spiral bits are gorgeous and definitely on my wishlist!

I purchased just to try it because it was on sale for $32. I did not expect it to be that good. Given another sale chance I would like to get a downcut spiral bit too. Chisel was saying that the upcut bit is best used for mortising.
When do you actually use a downcut spiral bit?

Re: Spiral upcut/downcut router bits
Hi,
Spiral downcut bits are best used on trenching formica or melamine faced boards, the downward slicing motion of the blades prevents chipoff on the face of the board. But because of the stress caused by chip buildup these type of bits are best used on table, overhead or CNC routers. While the Compression Cutter (combination upcut/downcut) are exclusive to industrial CNC routers. The reason is that it cuts double faced melamine board through in one pass with opposite slicing motion to prevent chipoff on both surface.
Cheers,

Re: Spiral upcut/downcut router bits
Not sure about terminology, but I would say
chipoff = when material that shouldn't come off does
feathering = when material that should come off doesn't (but instead gets bent aside)
On wood, when cutting rabbets with a straight bit, I get occasional chipoff on the short vertical end edges, and feathering on the long horizontal top edges. It looks like cloth that frayed. It requires an additional step of filing it. Some kinds of wood seem to have more tendency to feather than others. I expect that a downcut bit will solve this feathering problem, though it is limited to shallow cuts or multiple shallow passes because of waste buildup.
While good for deep mortising, I am guessing that an upcut bit may have higher tendency to cause chipoff than a straight bit.
Seems that you can't have your cake and eat it too, with either direction. but I'm not complaining.
To avoid confusion with up vs. down (on router table, upcut bit will propel chips down), they should called them out and in.
