hi,

i'm looking at purchasing a circular saw. i don't think i need the fancies like the laser and other new technology ekek. as long as the saw is stable, does not wobble and cuts well, its fine.

makita would definitely be way out of my league because of the price (though i really like it).

requirements
- 7.25" blade
- 220v of course
- warranty
-abundant blades and can easily be bought in mall, wilcon, home depot, and the like

is there anything else that i need to consider here?

the intention here is just an average weekend daddy diy'er.

a Makita 71/4 is around 5,700. BDs and Maktec should be cheaper.

Dumb mistakes will always be dumb mistakes, unless . . . . you learn from it, and then it will be learning experience.

thanks for the link, Jay, I used to have that exact model and never experienced the blade guard sticking, but that is certainly a good warning.

Timb IIRC you once told me that if you're going to get a circular saw again you will go for a 6 1/2"? Does that opinion still holds. Come to think of it a lighter circular saw would probably be a good choice unless probably when one needs to cut larger stock.

yes, that is still an option I plan to keep. I will have that 6 1/4" someday...
weight is very much something I could appreciate, I wouldn't mind a 5 1/4" one too if opportunity presents itself... 🙂

Re: Suggest me a 7-1/4 circular saw

That's what I'm thinking too. Get a lighter circular saw ( probably a 6 1/2 incher ) for woodworking and dedicate my existing Craftsman 7 1/4" ( loaded with a Freud Diablo Steel blade ) for metal working. I know that metal will kill the saw faster so I'm not doing it yet till I get a new one for woodworking.

As much as possible I wouldn't go for a second hand. I'd still go the route of a brand new, but it depends really on the condition of the machine.

As for budget consideration, I wouldn't go above 5k. If there is a 3k, why not. I don't like to sound discriminating, but I also don't want chiwanese models.

It seems I forgot to consider the weight here. I think I'd go for a lightweight one. Also considering my budget, maybe the 6.25 or the 5.25 would fit my budget of less than 5k. I only plan on chopping wood.

BTW, are the blades of these size easy access locally?

Re: Suggest me a 7-1/4 circular saw

Actually, P6k for a brand new Makita portable saw is quite reasonable IMHO as it is less than double those in the next lower tier.

There are two sides to the weight of a portable saw. A light one is easy to control BUT will get out of control with greater ease too. I think I can confidently say I know this well as I have 4 portable saws: 5", 7", and two 10", and I've a lot of wood with these (except the 5"), and mostly of these cuts were curves.

The 5" saw is new. I'm liking it a lot I must say. Last night I used it to slice off the end of the new 2x8x20 I had someone buy so I could check the grain pattern. Not only was it extremely convenient, I could use it too even though it was 9pm because it doesn't make so much noise.

Actually, low quality and Made In China are not necessarily synonymous. It really depends on the particular manufacturer. Also, you guys should keep an open mind about surplus. The 5" saw I just bought was a return but not a scratch on it and it works wonderfully, the reason it was returned I suspect is because the blade is missing one of its teeth. Just keep and open mind, carefully inspect, and have enough restraint to say "no thank you" when you find something doubtful.

I think you are right on the idea of being open minded on surplus and I think I should.

Where do you spot those kinds of "not damaged" surplus?

Re: Suggest me a 7-1/4 circular saw

Quite happy with Bosch GKS 190. Got it for P5,800 in 2006 from a Bosch dealer in Cubao. Panda probably had and has a better price.

7.25 in (184 mm) circular saw blades are easy to find locally. I saw Bosch, Irwin, Makita, MaxSell, Nicholson, and Power Craft blades at various stores. Except Panda. For some reason, Panda doesn't seem to sell circular saw blades, although they sell jig saw blades.

Make sure that the blade's hole size matches the saw's arbor size, or if not, that there is an adapter.
