nice work! not bad for a beginner...i was before looking at the possibility of getting that mini lathe set up made by jorgensen available at the favorite shop. i have the 750watts drill to power the jig.
but it is really nice to produce something like that...that finial may sell for about 100 bucks at most depot.
pagawa na lang ako sayo bro! igawa mo ako ng ends ng curtain rods!
hehe
btw how much is the set of lathe gouges (marples)..from LYS ba? (YALE yata..) i saw one there..could be the last set?

Re: Ticket To wood Turnings
Hi. I'm from the UK and have been turning for many years. Now live near to Tagaytay and recently bought one of these lathes from a store in Binondo to save me importing one from the UK. Fortunately I had previously imported my old turning tools and they all do fine. I bolted the TMC-1000 down really well with 1/2inch bolts onto a sturdy bench and it does seem ok as long as you make sure not to have the speed too high when you begin turning a rough piece. OK to turn up the speed one it has been rough turned. The motor start capacitor blew up after about 2weeks of use, but fortunately I was able to get hold of a suitable capacitor from Deeko. A bit larger than the original so had to mount it elsewhere. Been running fine since. The big problem now is finding good enough materials in the Philippines. Cannot seem to find tung or Danish oil for finishing and almost impossible to get a good supply of 'Exotic' woods other than the basic ones. Nobody imports and quality wood here. Looks as though I will have to resort to a Balikbayan service to import some wood blanks from the UK and US as well other necessary materials.
Cheers
Jeff

I am an importer of American and African Lumber. I have square cut wood of American Black Walnut, White Oak and African Golden Teak or Iroko as it is known, w/c you could use for turning projects. Just PM me should you need some.

A web search for 'pinoyhandyman tung oil' yields:
http://pinoyhandyman.com/showthread.php?t=816
Thread mentions one local source for Woodcraft/WoodRiver pure tung oil. IIRC, another brand (Old Masters?) popped up at Wilcon in last year or so, but you'll pay through the nose vs. importing yourself.
Haven't seen any BLO/varnish/mineral spirits mixture (Danish oil) locally yet. For varnish/mineral spirits mixture (wiping varnish), thread mentions Zar.
Shipping issue: Pure tung oil does not appear to be categorized as combustible or hazardous (see thread). Any simulated 'tung oil' finish will probably be combustible if not flammable.
