Re: Triton Routers

Newbie question, lps:

Why are people here buying Triton from the US when same tools can also be bought from Australia where the voltage is about same as Philippines? I hesitate buying power tools that need to be connected to a stepdown due to risk of plugging into a higher-than-rated voltage.

Is the 50Hz cycle a big diff from our 60Hz? Is shipping from Australia more expensive?

Re: Triton Routers

I believe its mainly because alot of us have relatives in the US and can easily send balikbayan boxes so its more accessible in that sense

Ah...makes sense.

I realized recently that all the surplus tools I get from Sulit are from Australia and that, aside from the plug, they seem to be electrically compatible with the Philippines.

Thanks.

Re: Triton Routers

plugging 50hz to 60hz ac source will result in excessive motor heat buildup... 🙂

Re: Triton Routers

plugging 50hz to 60hz ac source will result in excessive motor heat buildup... 🙂

I believe that the idea may have been a bit twisted since most people regard the frequency difference, which is true if we are plugging a 60Hz into a 50Hz source. In our case, plugging a 50Hz into our native 60Hz would be OK and the transformer would run cooler since a 50Hz transformer would have more windings.

Maybe instead of me trying hard to explain, I'll just post some articles instead (Caveat Emptor):

Motors Appliances that use motors cause additional problems. While "universal" motors (as used in power drills, most blenders and other small appliances, vacuum cleaners and the like) don't care about the frequency at all, the same is not true of induction motors. Induction motors are used in some (mainly older) washing machines, clothes dryers, bench drills, grinders, air compressors and many other products. A 60Hz induction motor will draw more current and run slower with 50Hz mains, and of course the opposite is true of motors designed for 50Hz. In general it's best never to consider using imported equipment that uses an induction motor designed for a different voltage or frequency. Likewise, kitchen appliances are usually subject to rigorous country (and mains supply voltage) specific electrical safety tests, so moving them from one country to another is not usually a good idea.

Re: Triton Routers

This is true for AC motors (maybe for fixed speed only), because the frequency of the AC line controls the rotation speed.

So if you plug a motor designed for 50Hz into a 60Hz outlet, it will run 20% faster, hence hotter. And it also means 20% more wear and tear.

For variable speed motors... it depends how the speed control is implemented.

Re: Triton Routers

So this means all those surplus/used Ryobi tools we buy at Sulit would wear out fast?

Triton Router

This is not a review of the Triton router. I know there'll be much more Triton routers coming soon on the next online tools arriving. I'll just leave it up to the Masters to do the review. I just want to share my experience on the purchase of my Triton MOF001.
After deciding to get a Triton router on-line, a friend of mine suggested that why get a 110v router from the US when you could get a same router at 240v from the UK, with a little higher price, but you won't be needing a step-down transformer. So being a compulsive buyer, I immediately placed an order at Amazon UK and... Taah daah! The router arrived in my doorstep in less than seven days! Here it is...

Re: Triton Router

Just wondering. How much was the shipping cost from UK?

Planning to get a few power tools too but I reckon getting 220V is really a plus even if priced a bit higher.

Thanks,

Jay
