Been using this for a while now and am very satisfied with how well it works right out of the box.
No tuning needed whatsoever. Sole is very flat, so is the bed that sits the blade. The adjuster has little play into it unlike the stanleys making it easier to adjust the blade. The mouth is easily adjusted with just a turn of the big brass knob. You can quicly adjust from heavy to thin shavings without having to move the whole bed like those of the stanley.
The setscrews also make it easier to retain your blade settings and mouth opening when removing the blade for honing.

Re: Veritas low angle jointer plane
The massive A2 steel blade makes it it less prone to chattering.
Comparing some of the blades i have, nothing comes close to the thickness of the veritas blade (L-R: veritas, mujingfang smoother, ECE scrub, stanley jack muji jack)
The instructions for the blade was to hone it before use but i tried it out anyway and it gave great results.
This is after using it to plane several boards already. Bacon!
This plane is quite expensive but i think it is well worth it if you are into handplanes. The performance of this plane is now the benchmark for all my other planes.
Re: Veritas low angle jointer plane
well, that does set the standards very high... which also means that the next items are bound to be as good and, well........ expensive. But I do agree, ease of use and set-up is worth the extra bucks.
using cheap or even low quality handplanes like some of my Stanley's will have to be heavily tweaked before they start to perform.
and the tweaks aren't for the weak of heart 😡

The benchmark is also set for tuning my other planes. Although i doubt it would reach the level of the veritas..
Yup, tuning a plane is difficult, specially if the problem is the sole being not flat.
i have spent several hours already flattening the sole of the #4 and its still not flat..
That's probably why many people are turned off with handplaning. Its difficult to use when not properly tuned.

working on very hardwood or curly burls makes that toy a requirement... I'll probably get one too, but after the biscuit joiner.

Can the Stanley planes be sent to a machine shop for sole flattening. How about if you load it with a Hock Blade?
or better yet Get a Veritas ...... 😮

You may first try to look at Finewoodworking: How To Use and Tune Up a Hand Plane
IMHO, buying another plane doesn't solve the problem of having an untuned plane it just leaves you an expensive paper weight and a hole in your pocket.
But as they say, to each his own.
Re: Veritas low angle jointer plane
Great link Jarod. Thanks!
right now i am hooked onto hand planing. Its a very different sensation from using powertools... cant describe...

Your Stanley hand planes are well tuned and balanced. Remember I checked these when you were doing the conference table. I note a big difference between your tuned planes and the new ones.
Did you make a blog before on plane tune up? I can't seem to locate it anymore.
