Re: Veritas low angle jointer plane

Gentlemen,

Might I suggest that on the next EB, we also focus on hand tools. Power tools are great for speed and accuracy, but we should also be developing our hand skills. How about a lesson on tuning planes and how to get .2 micron shavings from hardwood? (or bacon as Moji would put it) I think we got something started when some of us eagerly tried to sharpen some of our handplane blades c/o Timbers' waterstones and veritas guide. Maybe Moji can lead in the handplaning department. I have used an 12 in thickness planer and a belt sander the past 12 years for most of my projects, but frankly, my handplaning skills are mediocre. I'm interested in improving these skills.

So how about it?

Re: Veritas low angle jointer plane

that sounds really good workbench, as of today the best performing handplane that I have is the No. 7 which I tuned up. It never crossed my mind to tune my No.4 since it was handed down to me from my grandfather, but lately I believe I should bite the bullet and tune it up.
So, yes, we can have that handplane eb if you ask me. Pero, ano naman ang gagawin ng mga magbabakal :D?

Now if we pursue, request ko lang magdala ng water-stones for own use... 😉 I will supply the mechanic's blue, a flat glass plate (maybe moji can bring his granite slab)...

other items needed would be metal files (course and fine), sandpaper (240, 320 and 400 grits, higher is your option) a,d most of all bring confidence (lakas ng loob) as it isn't easy to tune up a handplane especially the sole.... 😀

Re: Veritas low angle jointer plane

game ako dyan, buo ang loob ko, kaso basag ang labas, :p

yes that's true," hindi puedeng marunong lang gumamit, pero hindi naman marunong mag alaga"...and handplanes are one of the most important tools in woodworking. that's why it's very important to know how to use the handplanes, from honing to tuning. me too, i'm not that good in handplaning:confused:

magdala na rin ng kanya kanya wood for planing.

Re: Veritas low angle jointer plane

since only a few can do the tune up at the same time, mag schedule ako ng session for it sa court. if we can have 3 members go na ako... please be warned that flattening the handplane sole will take at least 3 to 4 hours, hindi pa kasama yung blade...
So kung merong gustong mag session temporary schedule ko would be Saturday Feb 5, 1pm onward...
sign in so I can make a thread for it...

Re: Veritas low angle jointer plane

I can probably bring the granite slab but as Timber says bring your own sandpaper. For really out of flat soles i suggest bringing lots of 80 and 100 grit sandpaper. Even at that grit it will take a lot of time to get a sole flat.

Re: Veritas low angle jointer plane

I'm glad a few of us agree on the "Handplane" EB. Blocked out Feb. 5 on my calendar already. Hopefully I can get the japanese plane working (aka "the grater"). I can also bring my General blade honing guide for your scrutiny as well as my other planes.

Timber,
Just confirm the date, I'm ready to go!
