I havent been lurking the forums much lately. Baby and work (well not really, more like tired when i get home)
lately i have been more inclined to hand tools. Being one who started the hobby with powertools this feels like the "next step" in the craft.
for the life of me, i cant seem to find a ripping handsaw. Either i get a combination or a crosscut saw.
Re: whats a good handsaw for ripping? coz i cant find one
if you look into some home depot and the likes of handyman and ace, you will not find any ripping saw...
you can try the old hardwares instead.
mine is a combination rip and cross cut but is teflon coated.
sandvik superior xt made in denmark with superb teeth.
there is one still available from my favorite store in nueva ecija.
for 700 bucks..old stock new.
here it is.

New Old Stock is the way to go. Sometimes they don't make tools the same way they did before specially when outsourced already.

Re: whats a good handsaw for ripping? coz i cant find one
The price sure is very attractive.
Violaine, can you send me the contact of your store. Baka pa air21 ko nalang sa kanila yung item. Hmmmm i wonder if panda carries a rip saw
But teflon sure is nice when ripping thick stocks... Minimal binding diba?
Re: whats a good handsaw for ripping? coz i cant find one
How effective is the teflon coating? Doesn't it just get scraped away when used?

will try bro..if you want i can get the saw and you can attend the next eb sometime in january.no prob.
@moji,
i swear to the teflon hehe..its a plus to have it off site far from the electric tools.
the teflon coating is thick and doesnt seem to be scraped away by ordinary sawing..
sawing is effortless especially with kiln dried stocks.

Yeah, have not seen a ripsaw too in most hardwares.
This was also my mindset when I got my first set of power tools.
All the pictures in the catalogs made wood work seem a stroll in the park. In reality the ejected saw dust was left out in the picture pala 😮
Nevertheless power tools (PLUS respirator /or dust control system) are still essential because of speed, repeatability of cuts and almost effortless to work with.
I like hand tools because it's:
-Quiet
-Generally produces shavings not saw dust
-Unique cuts
-Often times you can work directly on the piece. No jigs.
-Cordless :p
-No electricity or batteries needed (savings / eco friendly;))
-Excercise
-Will last longer than your power tools. No upgrades, breakdowns. Thus it becomes an heirloom
Those are just my thoughts on hand tools, I'm not a Rob Cosman advocate ha
I love both hand and power tools specially the router!

@mrjason,
have you seen the youtube videos at lumberjocks forum? posted originally by handicraftsjp about an old master japanese craftsman who uses just handtools to make nice jewelry boxes and small cabinets..no nails man! just wooden pegs! and inside the miter joints arent simply miters but inside these miters are HIDDEN dovetailed joints!
napahiya tuloy ako with all the tools i have tapos wala ako magawa ni isang decent project recently.
to me...this man's work is painstaking!
and of course...this was shot in hi def.
you will enjoy the videos.

Hi Doc V.
Thanks for sharing those video links!
Seen some on cable TV but what you posted is a video WIP!
Long time pondering how they make those stopped dadoes. I thought
it was a saw and an OWT. Its some sort of mortise gauge pala that can CUT and a chisel. Clean up is with a custom plane.
Thanks, thanks! enjoyed it.
