Re: whats a good handsaw for ripping? coz i cant find one

Some insights I wanna blurt out when I saw the video:
1) They are fond of less dense wood, that's why it seems:
- easier and faster to shave
- lighter to construct
- the marking gauge seems to works as a part time chisel as well
- they just hammer the waste part when making finger joints
2) They don't need work benches as I think they are fond of squatting in the floor
3) What could be the gooey stuff they used in sticking the "micro profile" around the boxes
4) Love the pilot hole tool that they used, not sure if it's too sharp if the wood is just soft like pine
5) Lotsa hand planes!!! I'm starting to be a fan of those large planes.

Re: whats a good handsaw for ripping? coz i cant find one

a year ago, my brother gave mom a surplus but well kept japanese three column display cabinet from a surplus shop selling japanese household items and the like..the cabinet is made of very light soft wood (pine i guess) with some nice grained veneers..very well made...perfect joineries and crisp details...the hardwares are simple but functional and the finish i think is satin poly but i cant tell 100%...the cabinet although 6 feet tall is light by local standard and can be moved around easily.i wanted to duplicate the construction but the hard thing is finding the right wood and the hardwares.

Seen at a True Value, I don't know whether these are good, for ripping, or both:
Bahco PrizeCut NP-22-U7/8-HP - P849.75
Bahco Superior 2600-22-XT-HP - P2,274.75

both of which are listed in the manufacturer's catalog.

If these are at True Value, they will probably also be at lesser known/provincial stores for less, as was/is the case with Bahco hacksaws.

Re: whats a good handsaw for ripping? coz i cant find one

when i visited our ancestral home in nueva ecija, i dug the dungeon and look what i have found!
this is the saw i thought i lost some place but is sitting for ages in a dark damp corner of the storage...i bought this in 1993 i reckon.

its a sandvik fine toothed handsaw...ok sana pang dovetail....huhu

this is the handle end

the teeth at the middle...the rust sooo deep.

i wonder if i can still salvage this but i tried it on a PVC pipe and whoa! it worked just fine!
i am thinking of putting it inside a display cabinet instead of using it.

clearly, these fine sandvik handsaws will last when pampered.

Did not see any other handsaws besides the two models mentioned. But there were two models of hacksaws:
317 - Made in China - P879.75
319 - Made in Sweden - P1,389.75
both with Sandflex 24 tpi blades
10% discount, which would put the 319 at about the same local cost that you reported for the Starrett K145.

Going back to handsaws, from the cited specs, the blade thicknesses are 0.83 mm (PrizeCut) and 1.03 mm (Superior). A bit thicker than bandsaw blades (~0.6 mm ?) and Japanese saw blades (~0.2 to ~0.8 mm ?).

I'd take the Bahco hacksaw instead of the Starrett anytime of the day. It's just that I did not see one when I was out for a hacksaw. The Starrett ( Brazilian made) is also a good hacksaw and can put high tension on the blade with ease. It's just a personal preference as I like Swedish made Bahco tools.

@V

I keep coming back to look at your old saw. Looks like surface rust only. Try finer grit sand paper a bit and soak it in vinegar.

Re: whats a good handsaw for ripping? coz i cant find one

unfortunately i ruined the teeth edges when i tried to buff the saw plate with a 80 grit sanding pad chucked to the variable speed bosch angle grinder.now, it wont cut nicely on a pvc anymore.i dont think a saw set will correct the problem.

Ouch ... if it has sentimental value then you can buy a Stanley saw and have the blade fitted. Some shops actually do this. In fact they break down the Stanley saw blades and make smaller saws out of it. You can even specify the teeth count, depth and the angle you require.

This one below is a sample of their mods. Karpintero saw. Not as high performance as the Japanese pull saws but quite comfortable to use at other times. Light weight and I love using this for plywood. I think I paid around 200 pesos or maybe even less for it.

Re: whats a good handsaw for ripping? coz i cant find one

Doc,

You may have to reshape and re sharpen your saw teeth.. but i think you need to remove the rust first.. why don't you ask owyn to help you, i think it was he who removed rust thru electrolysis? That might help in preventing more damage to the teeth..

@jay

I like those local saws although one of our carpenters say that they don't make them like they used to anymore..He still likes his older one over the ones available today.
