Re: whats a good VS plunge router ( for all around use)

Plenty of nice tools available elsewhere, but there is always the voltage problem.

To use 120 V power tools locally, is it possible to do some internal rewiring or low-cost internal modification or flip some internal switch to make the tool work directly on 240 V?

Ignoring the issue of warranty being voided, is this technically possible? Has anyone inquired from Bosch or Makita or other brand name distributor whether their service centers could do such internal rewiring?

Or is a 120 V motor so different from a 240 V motor, such that the only way would be to replace the entire motor?

JayL

By any chance does anyone sell it locally? i had checked locally and it seems all they have is the gmr1

I purchased it when it was on sale at amazon for around $180 including the freebie edge guides. I doubt if it is available locally.

With regards to all my 110V tools I just use Automatic Voltage Regulators with step down capabilities. Since I have more than a few 110 volt tools the cost of the AVRs is justified.

Here's the portable RT I purchased with it.

Millermatic 180 Autoset Mig Welder
Miller Spoolmate 100 Spool Gun
Victor Firepower 350 Oxy Ace Outfit
3M Speedglas 9002X AD Helmet
Makita LC1230 Dry Cut Saw
Ingersoll Rand Air Tools
Snap On Tools
Metabo Power Tools
Norseman Drill Cutting Tools
Bosch Power Tools
3M PPS

I am also eyeing that bosch router table. That RT and the Router adds up to the price of a 3612c sob...

We filled our balikbayan box with baby stuffs so it did not have space for a router or the RT

I may concede with 3612c but iam hoping they have the rp2301fc model available (simply coz it looks cooler but identical specs with the 3612c).

Makita should have more than one distributor. ang mahal ng presyo ni Mayon. Sila Dewalt/Black and Decker naman kulang kulang products! they didnt even bring in their routers or sliding compound miter saw

The Maxsell lemon wont be refunded but will be replace with a new unit. Will relegate it to the planing jig, since it works perfect in this respect.

Guad,
110V routers can be made to 220v as per the Makita distributor (Mayon) but the cost is around 9K +-... better to buy them 220v and locally (that is what I did). Rewiring imho isn't worth the trouble unless the tool is old and damaged, then I probably would.

the 3612 and 3612C are plunge based routers bee. and the rp2301fc isn't going to be available anytime soon (not within two to three years) though the rp1800 is available with 1/4" collet capacity.. Makita has only one distributor locally and that is Mayon, the other option you might find is buying in asia, but when you do check, it cost as much as what we pay for. it is the US and UK market that sees such price drops that Asians rarely have.
The Bosch that Jay has is really very nice and handy. Don't get me wrong, before I bought my 3612C, I scouted for ALL the available routers locally. A Bosch router 2.25Hp can be had but it is an old model and single speed at Php18K, I have seen the maxsell that Bee has, went looking for an older model of Maxell that could have been made by ELU, seen the Metabo 1hp router(which I love, but will not buy, too expensive), seen several Ryobi's, Ozito's and GMC's (they look nice, but these were secondhand and I don't know how it performs) a Dewalt DW613 is also available 1/4" collet cap. lang din though and there are about 7 China made no name routers available. considered the 3612 for price, but after thinking of it about 200 times(maybe more) I just closed my eyes and paid the man, got myself the 3612C. felt bad letting hard earned cash go (really), but once I got home, opened the box and started the router, I forgot about what I spent, now, I am very happy with it with the thought of spending so much behind me...

@ Timber

Resale value for good tools is also good. I'm sure its money well spent as you can recover if you sell it specially considering the way you use and take care of your tools.

Re: whats a good VS plunge router ( for all around use)

my new router (3612c)is now the most dear equipment in my workshop. Followed by the trusty miter saw.

I will be grabbing it sometime this week or early next week! Now all i need to find out is how to mount the thing on an RT (there was a mod for a shop made raiser) and how to unmount it in a simple fashion when i need it freehand.

as for the maxsell. i will be using a rig that will have it permanently attached for planing purposes (when i get the replacement unit)

I will finally be able to use the ripfence and miter guage of the Jet TS for the RT . I will be getting those premade stair threads at wilcon for the table top. Will just finish it slick. I think these are tanguile. and use it as counter top. I dont really fancy working with boards for some reason.

I also got some plastic chopping boards and some bamboo chopping boards at daiso store .. hahaha. will try to use these for the insert plate. but i read the 3612 is 13 lbs.... i wonder if it will hold. if not i will be scavenging for some 5 mm aluminum sheets

Re: whats a good VS plunge router ( for all around use)

I got it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

damn.... Timber is spot on when he described the 3612C!

only one thing i found different from his impression is the soft start. its not as smooth as i expected. The maxsell "cringe" is smoother i think 🙂

I also found out i didnt need a raiser since this already has a knob for fine height adjustments.

The kickback from the reverse break is kinda scary at first though 😛

The maxsell router was "replaced" today... it still has the same alignment issues ....

hehehe, do you still remember what you spent? 🙂
the soft start doesn't work upside down, when used for the rt, or so I was told..
congrats bee, that should keep you happy for a long long time...
cheers.

Did you buy directly from the distributor (Mayon) or from one of the many Makita dealers?

In general, isn't price competition supposed to happen among the dealers, so that is where the chance for lowest or lower price would be, not at the distributor level (unless distributor is open to undercutting or competing with its dealers)? Doesn't it work this way in Makita case?

Re: whats a good VS plunge router ( for all around use)

I asked somebody to buy it for me. Gives them the advantage of getting a cheaper price from Mayon. I cant tell the price though 😛 otherwise the store that got it for me will kill me.

the retail was 25K something or so i was told

Re: whats a good VS plunge router ( for all around use)

just slightly lower. but assuming i did get the distributor's price, the store you got it from didnt get much profit.
