Re: Where to buy a good Bandsaw

Having seen the cast iron bones of the powermatic which is ribbed for strength, and having a few structural steel (for the mobile base,) i too entertained making a BS. I catch myself a lot of times visualizing it. IMHO however, it's like the story about making soup out of stone- it's free! But if you could just add carrots it would be better. And a little onions. And then just a little milk...and...

The powermatic bandsaw weighs 355 pounds- if one buys it as scrap metal at 30/kilo that works out to 4.8K (but i think i'll need 8K worth of steel for the body and stand/motor mount.) BIG v-belt pulleys as "blanks" for BS tires to be machined are over 50$ each on ebay. Some taps to go with grade 5 nut and bolts 1K. Motors and bearings (8K.) M.S. plate for the table and trunnion? Already got a DP, some welding skill... but one would really need a good lathe with swing bigger than the BS tires or at least access to a machine shop.

Sir Bee, I don't like discouraging people- as i don't like people telling me what i can and cannot do. And it's a fantastic feeling when you've achieved something you've never done before, having resolved one issue after another... it should be fun, but it'll be an ardous battle. In the end one will a have a good bandsaw, but it won't be cheap.

... I think, making a BS won't be for everybody (and that prolly includes me.) It's for someone who has loads of good scrap steel and unlimited access to a good machine shop (one with a Bridgeport mill!.)

I sure hope someday, someone here has got all the ingredients and will take the challenge to bring it all together. That would be a really bad-ass WIP lol. Go go go! Go go go! :p

====
Owyn<---- who's restoring a bandsaw, and because of the unavailability of an obscure "half dog point" set screw, will have to visit a machine shop.

Re: Where to buy a good Bandsaw

hinoki philippines actually also gets from OAV equipments tawian. That is the brand of table saw that i have

so now i emailed back to hinoki if they can get this instead

Re: Where to buy a good Bandsaw

A lot of members looking for a band saw will surely benefit from this thread. Looks to me like buying a band saw is more elusive than getting a table saw.

Re: Where to buy a good Bandsaw

i emailed OAV taiwan and they finally replied and said that they have a distributor here in the philippines.

I am inquiring of their 14" bandsaw with 6 inch riser block. If the price is right i may get another bandsaw for dedicated resawing and the Torq for curve cuts.

Ill inform you guys of the develop as i know at least three more PHM members are itching for a bandsaw.
