Re: Where to buy a good Bandsaw

ok here is the initial review.

By the time i got to touch this bandsaw today, i wouldve already read 10+ articles on bandsaw tuning and watched 6 videos on it.

One of the MOST important thing to look for in a tool when buying is to look for the presence of "adjustables" Hardly any tool will come out perfectly squared whether it be made by a chaiwanese or a german. so being in alignment off the bat is not important, but being able to adjust things to squareness.. and in this case the co-planarity of the bandsaw wheels

Needless to say Everything that can and needs to be adjusted is indeed present in this bandsaw!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO spent an hour adjusting and now cuts perfectly square even in stressed tight curves

Built:

hefty enought that i dont need to bolt it down and you hardly notice the vibration when using this, jeez my scroll saw vibrate alot more

Cast iron table"

There is a slit in the middle of the infeed of the table that terminate right smack in the middle. So when i took the table out since i needed to tune the wheels, i found that the right side of the table top dips!!!! i was thinking JEEEEZZZ this is cast iron there is no way i can mallet/pound/hammer-anvil this thing to flatness.. So anyway i installed it back and the installed the fairly substantial fence rail... and guess what.. The aluminum fence rail got the table top to be FLAT!!! parang ni breadboard nung fence yung cast iron top woooooooooohoooooooooooo!

noise:

induction motor eh..... 🙂 but when cutting you definitely need an ear protection. High pitched

Quality of Cuts:

After all the adjustments and tuning were done. It cuts perfectly square! even in the tightest allowable curve that the blade can handle. WOOOHOOOO

Aspects that can be improved:

The brush at the bottom wheel should and can be replace with a larger brush so wood resin and dust dont build in the wheels.

The bearing are,,, i dont know what they are, they are not ball bearings and dont think they are cool blocks, but they work pretty well, but i may jig something up with ball bearings later on

Fence can be adjusted to the desired angle to compensate for drift, the fence can flex if enough pressure is exerted, but this is a band saw and not a table saw so such pressures wont be necessary

I havent resawed yet but will see tomorrow

The knobs that come with the bandsaw are crappy, I just took them off and will make knobs of my own, they dont hang on to the nut properly. The Tensioning knob is now being handled by a vise grip hahahahah

Motor:

Pretty DAMN POWERFUL!!! i could only imagine how much power a 2hp - 3 hp bandsaw has. This thing is only 1hp, as much power as my bosch gmr1 , but cuts with easeeeeeeeeee... 5 inch material tanguile nga lang, havent tried hard woods. The motor sounds smooth too

So what do i think?

I have been getting a lucky streak of tool purchases lately and this is one of them 🙂

Re: Where to buy a good Bandsaw

no quick release, but i dont see much advantage in that,

ill photo the blade guides tomorrow, There is a "theory" going around that if a band saw is tensioned ENOUGH, there is little need for guides and drift compensation....

So far i just do the 1/4" deflection, I tried doing the plucking thing where it should produce a note and not a "thud" i stopped short of doing that coz the tension was pretty much really tight and was afraid id snap the blade

Also for good curves, a 1/4 blade is better, which i hope i will be able to get one soon

Re: Where to buy a good Bandsaw

hehehhehehe ermmmmm EB???? heheheheh

Its 20,000 pesos flat. i got an extra 1/2 inch blade for 800, but this thing will shine much better with a 1/4 inch blade

My take on bandsaw use.... I personally prefer one bandsaw for curve cutting and another just for resawing.

The time it takes to change the blade, adjust tension, compensate for drift, adjust guides is just too much of a hassle, and at the moment i dont see myself resawing much so.... siguro after 10 months ko na bilhin yung resaw bandsaw with 12" resaw 🙂

Oooh, it's alive! May that tailed apprentice of yours serve you well year after year, board feet after b.f. of materials =).

Oh uhm, maybe it's good to instruct everyone not to bother the operator while the machine is running? Focused on the work, wearing earmuffs and eye protection, an ill-timed tap on your shoulder to catch your attention might result to something else aside from a ruined workpiece?

Re: Where to buy a good Bandsaw

This thread actually got me to thinking a lot about bandsaws which I had always assumed (wrongly) that they are exotic and impossibly unaffordable. Emailed Grizzly a few days back to inquire. Here's the response:
We appreciate your interest in our G0555 The Ultimate 14" Bandsaw currently priced at $450.00 and freight of $74.00. The product shipping dimensions are:

Length Width Height Carton Type Weight
44" 21" 20" Cardboard 198 lbs.

This machine can also be switched to 220 Volts with just switching wires at the motor.

Add about $150 for shipping, comes to less than $600!
No I'm not getting one (yet  ), just thought this info may be useful to many of you.

USD600.00 is a very nice price landed, be careful about taxes though both here and there.
