Re: Wooden handplanes
Bros before you set your sights on those Japanese planes let me tell you that those things are extremely expensive. A friend of mine once brought me to a this place like Binondo but in Osaka and the only thing I managed to buy was a marking gauge! The wooden block planes displayed outside in the "bargains" section cost, IIRC, P3k and this was 10 years ago. I wasn't tool crazy at the time so the P500 I paid for the gauge was enough for me.
Re: Wooden handplanes
Thanks to this thread (and some other related threads),I got me a pair of Mujingfang hand planes (11inch and 7inch). Sorry, have no photos yet; my PC's video card died so can't upload pics for now.
Got them from the distributor themselves, Wah Tat, at Mong Kok. These planes are available at the Reclamation street shops for HKD240 upwards but Wah Tat sells the 11inch and 7inch for HKD160 and HKD150 respectively. Also got two chisels for HKD45 each.
The office is also the11th floor warehouse where the only English-speaking man there had to weave me thru the maze of shelves to pick out the planes and chisels for me. Felt like I was occupying too much of his busy time (tho he was graciously hospitable) so I just got the planes most accessible. In hindsight, I should've gotten a smaller block plane, too.
Now, hope I'll find the time to tune them!
