good am boys...
maximising the day that i feel better i decided to make another quick project..this time a book shelf..i got some double sided melamine coated 18mm mdf and braved to make a small wall hung bookshelf...roughly 36 inches long, 10" deep and about 10 inch tall.
problem with mdf is the edges..the open edges is unsightly aside from becoming a magnet for moisture and swelling eventually..my plan is to attach a solid wood edging but i know i got some extra long pvc edging to match the melamine wood design..but gluing long strips of pvc edging will need some motivation.
seeing my router table with half rounding bit still in place from the small warding tray project, i laminated some 1" pieces of stock to make it wider and routed the two edge and rip them on the TS..i needed four to complete.
i opted for a simple miter joinery..MS set at 45 degrees

Re: 3 hour build mdf book shelf
set the material with the target pencil mark
the middle support butt joint...
and a few brads here and there
the mid support edging is not pleasing to the eyes and it was never my intention to make a gruesome "V" cut joinery either..i tooka sharp chisel and pare away a few mm of wood.

Re: 3 hour build mdf book shelf
will need hand sanding to smoothen the profile later..but transition looks better now
my fear grew when i already ran out of materials..i still dont have a back support..looking further into the dungeon i found a long narrow piece of the same material...made a few pocket holes via the K4 kreg
thankfully, the good old Timber gave me some 1 1/4" pocket hole screws for soft woods but these are not good for mdf for they will surely split the mdf unless you pre drill the opposing hole...i went to find the K4 carry box and found 5 pieces of fine threaded square drive screws that came along with the jig...
torn between the two...i opted for the best..maybe i can remove the screws when the glue has dried.

Re: 3 hour build mdf book shelf
back support in place...still there are four open edges...maybe this time i can make use of the pvc plastic edging.
melamine glue is perfect for this job...id recommend highly this Titebond brand.
i hope to find the energy later to hang this piece.
thanks for viewing.
i really love carpentry!!!

Re: 3 hour build mdf book shelf
nakow! meron pala ako dado blade!
eh katamad kaya mag set up..:(
i will make a dado blade set up stand muna siguro.
Good God no woodworking mishaps! Just some dried melamine glue at the tip of my fingers. I wonder if they are toxic.
Keep safe amigos!

Re: 3 hour build mdf book shelf
thinking back..maybe the coarse threaded pocket hole screw will only split the mdf if screwed onto the narrow end.

Re: 3 hour build mdf book shelf
Aren't the screw self tapping so as to avoid spilts?
Btw Doc, based from the Titebond pic, it seems it's locally available looking at the price tag - I might be mistaken.

the kreg screws are really no good for mdf Jarod. especially the self tapping screws, these will crack and split mdf. confirmat is the screws of choice when mdf is used. There are other fasteners available but they are somewhat difficult to use, though they are very effective....:harp:

Re: 3 hour build mdf book shelf
Very nice, Doc.
I assume the back support is what you will drill screws through for hanging?
I also did a quickie shelf much like yours some weeks back. But nothing as pulido as yours!

pano pa kung pulido ang trabaho doc...:hammer:
currently i'm on the morris chair ( long version ) project, and i am making two projects simultaneously ( building another morris chair single, as i called it ) that's what making the project too long to finish. start pa ng vacation ako nagsimula sa project, until now, hindi pa ako nangangalahati...pasensya na wala pang wips.
just like you doc V, basta may free time, dun lang ako nakakagawa ng projects, and this summer vacation is one such busy one, hirap maghanap ng free time...
and then school days naman, hopefully by 2 weeks old school days medyo humaba na ang free time. then medyo bumilis na ang work sa project. then i'll post the pics.
about the mic contest, we ended up 2nd, pero ok lang, masaya, pati ba naman PHM nakisali sa gulo...:rave:

Almost. I used dark brown penetrating wood stain (can't recall name of hue).
