Re: MORRIS CHAIR, building a classic.

Sorry for the ignorance, could you somehow rephrase it again? My virtual router is having problems with this method 😀

sige, let me rephrase it....
get a piece of stick with a 1" x 1" x 12" (it can be any depending on the roundover bit, will be using 1/2" roundover bit for example).
now, start rounding over the piece 1 or 2" from the front end and stop 1 or 2" from the end. then roundover the other 3 sides the same way.
you will end up with a dowel that should be 1" in diameter with square stocks at the ends, this you can cut off to get the dowels...
using this method should be safer than rounding the stock all around since it can grab the stock and you would have no control over it without the ends.
intiendez? 😮

😀 😉

I guess Jonathan's new blood type is B...Bosch... :p

Peace!!!

Re: MORRIS CHAIR, building a classic.

Looking good Jonathan can’t wait for the finish product. Just want to share my Morris chair and hope it will give you an idea on the upholsters side. Finish using alcohol base stain.

Re: MORRIS CHAIR, building a classic.

this is the tricky part of the building process, doing the curved BACK SLATS, in doing so, i made a

scooping jig to make the woodblocks looked curved.

you can curved cuts on a woodblanks with a bandsaw, or a scrolsaw, but ain't got any, so hope

this jig will do wonders

Doing great jonathan specially with your jigs! This one (jig) must have been a pain to set-up. Bit depth and position of the stock should be right-on to achieve the result you got. When the saw dust flew you must have been wishing for a bandsaw;) hehe Cheers!

Re: MORRIS CHAIR, building a classic.

there several ways to skin a cat, using ski's and that jig works fine, a bandsaw would be easier, and a portable grinder can do that too. in my case, I would probably make a template and cut the curve using a handheld router with a long pattern and template bits, Moji would probably use a spokeshave 😀 ... there is no limit to what and how things can be done. important is to get there safe 😀

I'd have probably tried to steam-bend it (and broke it in the process).

ohh!! there are many styles of morris chairs, many modifications, but the straight lines, typical

of a morris chair is still there.

mine is GREGORY PAOLINI inspired, but without the bowed -arm.

i'm planning to build the upholstery myself with swmbo's touch, if time permits.

that's what i love about morris chair, napaka simple.

thanks chisel.
